Tropical tuber on a world tour

Ginger belongs to the ginger family and is mainly cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions such as from India to Malaysia and China. The botanical name of ginger is "Zingiber officinale." It is a perennial plant that can grow up to one meter tall. The good often lies hidden: beneath the ground, the plant grows the so-called rhizome, the actual ginger root. As a natural medicinal plant with bioactive substances, it has been of great importance in its native countries India and China for more than 5000 years. Later, the ancient Romans and Greeks also took a liking to the tropical wonder root. Its popularity grew so much that in the 13th century in England, it was considered a highly traded luxury good, especially popular among members of the nobility. This was ultimately the birth of the famous ginger tea.

Natural pain reliever

The ginger root is a marvel of nature: it contains many essential oils (e.g., zingiberene) and the pungent compound gingerol. In traditional medicine, the tuber was used early on as a natural remedy for gastrointestinal issues such as nausea and vomiting, as well as for cold symptoms. Ginger has anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and circulatory stimulating effects.
